Wind River Country’s reservoirs and lakes provide miles of shoreline and acres of open water to explore in a boat, kayak or canoe. The area’s largest reservoir—Boysen—is popular for motorboats, water skiing, jet skis and houseboats. Smaller lakes, such as Ocean Lake, Louis Lake or Worthen Reservoir, offer more protected waters for canoeing with lots of camping nearby.
Most lakes on public land offer free boating access, so the best place to start is to pull out your map. If you are heading to Yellowstone with a canoe on your roof rack, you might want to travel by way of the Loop Road , also called the Louis Lake Road, which is a rough dirt road that runs along the southeastern edge of the Wind River Mountains and gives you access to a number of subalpine lakes where the fishing is good and the views spectacular. If your are hauling your houseboat, check out Boysen Reservoir, where you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a Biblical story setting because of the strange juxtaposition of blue water and arid lands. Either way, there’s plenty of uncrowded waters in Wind River Country in which to get wet.

To find out more about the rules and regulations governing the use of motorized watercraft in Wyoming waters, visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department  website. For information on where to find good non-motorized boating, check in at the local sporting goods shops.
