Elk, mule deer, pronghorn, moose, game birds, even bighorn sheep, black bear and mountain lion are hunted in Wind River Country. Plus in a county that has more resident pronghorn than people, chances are you’ll be hunting alone once you leave the road.
The Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association is a good place to find out what kind of hunting guide services are available in Wind River Country. You’ll need a hunting license as well, but it often helps to talk to your guide first to get advice on how to walk through the process of securing a tag for the appropriate hunting areas.
Hunting season—which runs from late August into December depending on your weapon and quarry—is a magical time to be in Wind River Country. The aspen leaves turn from green to gold and then the snow begins to fly, driving the animals down from the mountains and into your scope.
