While Wind River Country is not known as a whitewater boating destination, there are some hidden gems that deserve mention and attract boaters every year.
Wind River Canyon is an area classic: exciting whitewater drops, long peaceful pools, towering canyon walls, and lots of wildlife along the riverbanks. The canyon is on Indian Rreservation lands, so boaters are required to be with a licensed guide. Wind River Canyon Whitewater and Fishing Guides offers whitewater raft trips, scenic floats and fishing excursions through the canyon in the summer. It’s a great way to cool off and break up a day of travel if you’re en route to Yellowstone.

If you are looking for your own adventure, several rivers in Fremont County offer exciting technical creek-drops during the spring runoff. Ranging in difficulty from Class II to Class V depending on water levels and river sections, these technical runs include the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie, the upper Wind River and the Sweetwater River. The Popo Agie and the Wind are both easily accessible and can provide a fun half-day activity for skilled boaters; the Sweetwater is more remote and committing and requires competent wilderness boaters.
