The
highway over Togwotee Pass
takes you to 9,000 feet and into a winter wonderland where you can ski or
snowshoe for miles over sparkling snow and through magical, snow-draped pine
forests. The scenery is spectacular: dripping turrets and fantastical towers
create the rampart of the Pinnacle Buttes while in the distance, the Teton
Mountains loom along the horizon.
There are a number of marked ski trails branching off Togwotee
Pass, while those looking to make
some turns have a choice: low-angle open slopes, glades or even extreme skiing
down the couloirs that cut their way through the Breccia cliffs.
The Lander Nordic Ski
Association maintains more than 10 kilometers
of rolling ski trails groomed for both skate and classic cross country skiing
at Beaver Creek Nordic Center on South Pass. If conditions allow, trails are also groomed at the golf
course in Lander. In Sinks Canyon, there are marked, ungroomed trails for cross-country
skiing and snowshoeing that take you along the frosty Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River and into the quiet of the Douglas fir forests. Skate
skiers will often tackle the Loop Road—a 26-mile section of the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail—that
provides for a challenging day outing with dramatic scenery, lots of hills to
climb, and a nice descent for the weary into Sinks Canyon as your reward. Check with the Wyoming Snowmobile
Association for up-to-date grooming reports .
